Developing Culturally Sensitive Services

The NCSS has a national lead for its black and minority ethnic workstream. This is in recognition of the need to develop culturally competent services and promote the development of appropriate service delivery models and workforce planning.

Definition

The 'Delivering Race Equality in Mental Health Care' report uses the term Black and minority ethnic (BME) 'to refer to all people of minority ethnic status in England. It does not only refer to skin colour but to people of all groups who may experience discrimination and disadvantage, such as those of Irish origin, those of Mediterranean origin and East European migrants.'

Policy Context

The NSF requires that ‘The needs of specific black and minority ethnic (BME) groups within each community are represented in the local CAMHS needs assessment’

CAMHS should now be using their joint NCSS/Delivering Race Equality in Mental Healthcare (DRE) Action Plan as their central guide for reforming their strategic planning, commissioning, and delivery mechanisms to address inequality, and exclusion for BME young people and their families. This can be obtained from the CAMHS Regional Development Worker (RDW) or Race Equality Lead (REL)
